Across The Pond

Former Deepdale Ducks on the other side of the Pond

As well as domestic based players who have graced the turf of Deepdale, we shall also be looking at a couple of individuals who now ply their trade in the MLS. Firstly there is Danny Dichio who left Preston in April 2007 to join Toronto FC, the first team to play in the MLS that is from outside of the United States. Dichio is now in his second season in the MLS where he has largely been a success.

Toronto FC is a newly founded team in which Dichio scored their first ever league goal against Chicago Fire. The Reds went on to record their first ever win as a result which rocketed Dichio's popularity and made him into a cult hero among Toronto fans. During every game, after 24 minutes, the Toronto Fans sing Dichio's song in honour of the aforementioned goal which was scored after, yes you've guessed it, 24 minutes. Diche went on to score 6 goals in his first season with Toronto, including their very last of the season - ending the season as he started.

So far this season Dichio has featured in all 7 of Toronto's games with 6 starts and one substitute appearance. His only goal so far this season was against David Beckham's new club, LA Galaxy. Toronto won the game 3-2 with Dichio opening the scoring.

Speaking of David Beckham, the former Manchester United man's move to LA has been well documented since it was announced in January 2007. His first season was hampered with injuries thus causing him to make just 2 starts and 3 substitute appearances. This season however has started brightly for Beckham having made 8 appearances and scoring 3 goals.

Beckham netted his first goal Galaxy in their 2-0 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes to secure LA's first win of the season on the 3rd April 2008 following a heavy defeat to the Colorado Rapids the week before. Having now found his goal scoring touch, Becks went one better and netted two goals against Real Salt Lake to salvage a point for Galaxy after they found themselves 2-0 down after just 18 minute.

Up Next for Beckham is a trip to Pizza Hut Park as they take on FC Dallas later on today whilst Dichio and Toronto welcome the visit DC United from the nation's capitol on the 21st May.
