Across The Pond

Seeing as though the media spotlight has been on David Beckham this week, it makes sense to begin our round-up of the MLS with the former Manchester United midfielder and his LA Galaxy teammates.

David Beckham, Eddie Lewis & LA Galaxy

The Galaxy were involved in a friendly game against AC Milan during which David Beckham was jeered and booed by the Home Depot Centre crowd. Thiago Silva put Milan ahead before Beckham was on hand to provide his first of two assists by setting up Alan Gordon via a Landon Donovan pass. Milan then regained the lead in the 61st minute through veteran striker Filippo Inzaghi only to see Galaxy peg the Italian giants back for the second time. Galaxy salvaged a draw with a goal from Bryan Gordon who got on the end of a David Beckham corner. Eddie Lewis was involved for Galaxy too and nearly got himself on the score sheet just before Milan took the lead.

Before the Milan friendly, Galaxy were in MLS action against New York. Beckham made his comeback for LA who ran out as 3-1 winners. Alecko Eskandarian put the visitors ahead after just three minutes of play before Eddie Lewis provided an assist for Landon Donovan. Lewis and Donocan then swapped roles with the Galaxy skipper providing an assist for Lewis who netted on the stroke of half-time.

New York pulled a goal back in the last 3 minutes with a penalty from former Aston Villa striker Juan Pablo Angel. LA are now up to third in the Western Standings on 27 points and 5 behind Houston Dynamo.

Brian McBride & Chicago Fire

Former Fulham striker Brian McBride was in fine form during Fire’s 2-1 win over New England on Thursday. McBride put his side ahead after getting on the end of Blanco’s cross and converting from close-range. However the lead lasted no more than 10 minutes when New England pegged Fire back. Lithuanian striker Jankauskaus netted his first for the Revs after taking it down on his chest and hitting a deflected shot past Jon Busch.

Chicago were back in front just after the hour mark though thanks to Blanco when McBride turned provider. Fire occupy top spot in the Eastern Standings and are 1 point above DC United but have a game in hand.

Danny Dichio &Toronto Reds

Dichio came onto replace Adrian Serioux on 36 minutes during Toronto’s 1-1 draw with Houston Dynamo. The Reds took the lead through Dwayne De Rosario on 37 minutes but were unable to come back from Bobby Boswell’s 75th minute equaliser. Dichio was a nuisance throughout the match and if it wasn’t for straying offside on two occasions, he might have been able to net a winner for the Canadian side.
