Old Boys Carling Cup Round Up Part 1

Graham Alexander captained the Burnley side that saw off Oldham Athletic in the Carling Cup on Tuesday night in a 3-0 victory. Burnley are without a win in the league thus far so will be looking to build on the result against Oldham at the weekend when they take on Plymouth at Turf Moor.

Stoke City made it two 3-2 wins in a row as they came from behind to beat Cheltenham. Former Preston striker Richard Cresswell was on the score sheet for the Potters as they now look forward to the third round. Danny Pugh was also in the starting eleven for Stoke

At Portman Road, Tommy Miller came on for Ipswich to replace former Real Madrid star Ivan Campo in the Tractor Boys' 2-1 win over Colchester United. Having suffered a run of poor results recently, Jim Magilton will be relieved to have a win under his belt. Paul Reid was at the heart of Colchester's defence.

David Lucas was between the sticks for Leeds United's Carling Cup fixture with Crystal Palace. Leeds hammered Neil Warnock's side 4-0 on Tuesday night whose season seems to be going from bad to worse. Warnock will be keen to eradicate such performances by getting back on track as soon as possible.

Former skipper Kevin Nicholls and his Luton teammates endured another disappointing result after they were thrashed 5-1 by Reading at the Madejski. Luton will be disappointed that they have been knocked out in the manner that they were but at least now they can concentrate on clawing back the 30 point deficit and stay up.

Tamas Priskin was in from the start for Watford's 2-1 win over Darlington. The hornets made hard work of it as it took them until the 113th minute to find the winner with the game gone into extra time.

One of the biggest upsets of the round was at the Don Valley Stadium where Rotherham knocked out Championship high fliers Wolves on penalties. David Jones came on as a substitute in extra time and converted his penalty only to see the League Two outfit progress.

Carlo Nash made his Wigan debut and kept a clean sheet in the process as they recorded a 4-0 win over Notts County. Kevin Kilbane started for Wigan and was credited with two assists, but was later substituted.

Elsewhere, Gareth Ainsworth was an unused substitute for QPR in their 4-0 win over League One outfit, Carlisle United.

Wednesday nights Carling Cup fixtures where former Preston players could feature are:

Huddersfield Town Vs Sheffield United (Chris Lucketti)
Nottingham Forest Vs Sunderland (Kelvin Wilson, David Healy, Dickson Etuhu)

A round up of the above fixtures to follow.
