Old Boys Carling Cup Round-Up Part 1

Tuesday night saw the first half of the 3rd round of the Carling Cup take place with several notable former Preston players involved.

Firstly, at Turf Moor, Preston's next opponents Burnley saw off Premiership Fulham in a 1-0 win. Graham Alexander played the full ninety minutes for the Clarets who are now unbeaten in six. Jay Rodriguez got the only goal of the game in the 88th minute.

David Lucas dropped to the bench for Leeds United's 3-2 win over Hartlepool at Elland Road. Lucas was enjoying a run in the Leeds first team and so will feel hard done by with his place in the bench.

Richard Cresswell started up front for Stoke in their penalty shootout win over Championship side Reading. The score was level at 2-2 come the final whistle and indeed extra time meaning that the game had to be decided on penalties. Ricardo Fuller netted the first penalty of the night for Stoke as he came on as a sub for Cresswell.

Sunderland came from two goals down against Northampton at the Stadium of Light to take the game to extra time and penalties. Antony Stokes scored two in the last four minutes to take the game in to extra time. Former Preston striker David Healy was in from the start hoping to add to his one goal for Sunderland which incidentally came in the previous round against Forest.

Wednesday night see's several fixtures that could involve former Preston personnel. Firstly there is David Moyes' Everton who take on Blackburn at Ewood, Patrick Agyemang and his QPR teammates travel to the midlands to face Aston Villa whilst Tommy Miller could feature Ipswich against Wigan and possibly Kevin Kilbane. David Nugent may be in for a shock inclusion for Portsmouth's tie with Chelsea.
