Ricardo Fuller marked his return to the Premiership by scoreing a consolation goal for Stoke in their opening day defeat at Bolton. Fuller came off the bench for another bite of Premiership football after a failed spell at Portsmouth. Former White, Richard Cresswell started the game but could not make an impact for the Potterries side.

In the Championship, big spending Barnsley failed to notch up a win with Macken having nothing to show from the first league home game of the season. The former North Ender only managed a booking in the defeat.

Kelvin Wilson could not prevent Forest falling to a defeat against Swansea whilst Mears and Claude Davis played for the Rams in their draw against Bristol City. Brian Stock featured in Doncaster's home draw with Cardiff whilst Alexander participated in the match at Turf Moor as Burnley went down to Ipswich.

Chris Lucketti captained Huddersfield in their League One goalless draw with Colchester whilst ex boss Paul Simpson continued a good start to the season with Shrewsbury.
