Tony Bates has been a qualified referee since 1983 and joined the National List assistant referee in 1993. In 1996 he became a FIFA assistant referee and was also appointed to Euro 1996. Having also joined the National List of Referees in 1996 Tony Bates is now one of the longest serving in the football league. He was an Assistant Referee at the Charity Shield in 1995 and also in the FA Cup Final of 1996. He also refereed the FA Women's Cup Final in 2007.

So far this season in 33 matches Tony Bates has produced 60 yellow and 3 red cards. his last game was on 28 Match in a 2-2 drw between Rochdale and Exeter.

His assistants are Warren Atkin from West Sussex and William Bull from Hampshire. The fourth official is Richard Martin from Somerset.
