Jon Moss started refereeing in 1988, in local and supply leagues He was promoted to the National List of assistant referees in 2003 and to the National List of Referees in 2005. He was the referee at the Conference Play Off Final between Carlisle and Stevenage in 2005 and an England U-19 friendly game.

His first league match was a 1-0 win for Rochdale at Shrewsbury on 6 August 2005, later that season the first Championship game Jon Moss officiated was at Deepdale.

His last game involving Bury was a 2-1 home defeat in the FA Cup against Peterborough on 27 October 2010.

His last match was a 2-1 victory for Sheffield Wednesday at Notts County on 17 March.
