Geoff Eltringham got introduced into refereeing through a work college, he finished playing football after leaving secondary school and wanted to keep involved in football and thought refereeing was the best way to do that.

He gained a mid-season promotion to the Football League Assistants List in 2008/09 and was promoted to the Panel List of Referees at the end of the same season. His first game was a 2-2 draw between Morecambe and Hereford on 8 August 2009

It was on 9 February 2010 when he got his first game in the Championship as Sheffield Wednesday beat Blackpool 2-0.

The 2010/11 he had the joint highest number of red cards with 13.

His last match was a 2-0 win for Blackburn at Bristol City, which saw the home side reduced to ten men with the dismissal of Nathan Baker. His last Royals match saw a 1-1 draw at Blackpool on 7 April 2015.

In the 2013/14 season, Reading received an apology from referee Geoff Eltringham for his decision to book Chris Gunter for diving on Saturday.Gunter was shown a yellow card during the 0-0 draw at Blackburn despite having clearly been tripped in the box by Grant Hanley. It denied the visitors an obvious penalty and left both Gunter and former boss Nigel Adkins fuming.

Royals' boss wrote to the referee's assessor demanding an explanation and received a response that they made a mistake and it was a clear penalty.
