Geoff Eltringham got introduced into refereeing through a work college, he finished playing football after leaving secondary school and wanted to keep involved in football and thought refereeing was the best way to do that.

He gained a mid-season promotion to the Football League Assistants List in 2008/09 and was promoted to the Panel List of Referees at the end of the same season. His first game was a 2-2 draw between Morecambe and Hereford on 8 August 2009

It was on 9 February 2010 when he got his first game in the Championship as Sheffield Wednesday beat Blackpool 2-0.

This will be his third Championship matching following being in charge of Burnley’s 3-0 victory over Leicester earlier in the season and will be his first match he has officiated either a Preston or Crystal Palace match.

He has not been shy with the cards this season as four players have been sent off in his last five games; each match has also seen five yellow cards produced. This also includes his last match on 16 October when Rotherham won 3-2 Accrington, Stanley being reduced to ten men after 17 minutes. His total of red cards this season is equal to last seasons total but in less than half the matches.
