David Foster starting refereeing in 1999, in Newcastle, he spent two years as a contributory league referee and five seasons at panel league level. In 2003 he refereed the second leg of the Conference Play Off Final between Morecambe v Dagenham & Redbridge.

 

He was promoted to the National List of referees in 2006 and made his football league referee debut with a 1-0 win for Walsall at Rochdale on 5 August 2006.

 

His last match was a 3-0 home victory for Accrington at home to Port Vale on 26 March, which saw Port Vale reduced to ten men following the dismissal of Sean Rigg. The last time he was involved in a Swansea match was on 13 April 2009 with a 3-1 win at Barnsley.
