Mark Halsey, spent 12 years playing non-league football with teams such as Cambridge City and Hertford Town. In December 1984 he played one game for Barnet before joining St.Albans City. He started refereeing in 1989 and has been a Football League National List referee since the mid-1990s.

He was the referee in the Lilywhites last third tier play-off match against Gillingham and then refereed the 1999 Division 2 play-off final between Gillingham and Manchester City at Wembley on 30 May, which City won 3-1 on penalties the match finishing 2-2 after extra time.

Also in 1999 he was promoted to the Premier league referee list with his first match being a 1-1 draw between Wimbledon and Coventryon 14 August.

In 2000, he was added to the FIFA List of referees, officiating in the Toulon Tournament in the same year. In 2001 he was a referee at the World Student games in, and in 2002 at the FIFA World Disabled Championships held in Japan

Also in 2002, he was appointed as fourth official to Mike Riley in the FA Cup Final as Arsenal beat Chelsea 2-0.

His first major FIFA appointment came in 2004 when he refereed an International friendly between Belgium and France in Brussels.

On 5 August 2007 he took charge of the Community Shield as Manchester United won 3-0 on penalties after a 1-1 draw against Chelsea.

On 24 February 2008 he also took charge of the League Cup Final as Tottenham beat Chelsea 2-1 after extra time.

In August 2009 it was announced that he was suffering from lymphoma of the glands and had undergone surgery to remove a cancerous tumour in his throat, currently in remission. He relinquished his refereeing duties during treatment.

On 4 March 2010 he passed a referee fitness test with his first game back after his illness was a reserve match between Leicester and Scunthorpe.

He returned to the Football League on 3 April 2010 to referee the match between Rotherham and Port Vale.

On 9 August it was confirmed that he was to return to officiating in the Premier League, starting with the opening-day fixture, five days later as Blackpool won 4-0 at Wigan.

 

His last Huddersfield match was a 3-0 defeat at Doncaster on 1 January 2007 which sawHuddersfieldreduced to nine men in the space of two minutes. Ahmed was send off on 57 minutes with former PNE player Pawel Abbot red carded on 59 minutes.

His last match was a 2-0 win for Crystal Palace at Watford on 15 October.
