Mark Haywood started his refereeing career in West Yorkshire in 1993 progressing through the West Yorkshire and Northern Premier Leagues to reach the National List of assistant referees in 2002. Four years later in 2006 he was promoted to the National List of referees and made his league debut in a 1-1 draw between Notts County and Swindon on 23 September 2006, producing five yellow cards.

 

His last match was a 2-2 draw between Bournemouth and Charlton on 26 March. His last Reading match was a 1-1 draw at Bristol City on 19 December 2009 which saw the Royals Simon Church sent off on 90 minutes.
