Simon Hooper had been at Swindon Town for seven years before being released at the age of 16, He later played for Highworth Town and Swindon Supermarine.

 

He was a referee in the Hellenic League, Southern League and the Blue Square Premier. He became an assistant referee in the Football League in 2006 before breaking his leg in a five a side match in December which was undiagnosed for three weeks when it was thought to be a calf strain.

 

In 2008 he took charge of the Conference League Cup Final when Aldershot beat Rushden 4-3 on penalties after a 3-3 draw.

 

He joined the National list of referees for the start of the 2008/09 season and made his debut in the Football League in a 1-0 win for Shrewsbury at Exeter on 16 August 2008.

 

In 2012/13, he officiated the Capital One Cup match between Barclays Premier League side Swansea City and Barnsley, while he has also been in charge of matches involving Aston Villa, Leicester City and Hull City in the same competition over the next couple of seasons.

 

The FA Cup tie between Stoke City and Wrexham at Britannia Stadium in the 2014/15 campaign was Hooper's next taste of officiating a Barclays Premier League team, before the referee took charge of the League Two Play-Off final at Wembley Stadium.

 

He took charge of his first Premier League match in 2014/15, at Carrow Road as Norwich City lost 3-1 to Crystal Palace on their return to the Barclays Premier League.

 

His last match was a 1-0 win for Bury at Colchester on 3 October. His last Charlton match was a 2-1 home victory over Nottingham Forest on 3 March 2015
