Russell Booth started refereeing in 1984 in Mansfield and progressed to the National List of assistant referees in 1998. The following season he was promoted to the Select Group of assistant referees.

He reached the National List of referees in 2004; his first league game he refereed was a 3-1 home win for Bury against Yeovil on 7 August 2004. Later in the 2004/05 season he officiated in his first Championship game, this was at Deepdale against Coventry.

This season he has taken charge of 12 matches, producing 19 yellow and 2 red cards. His last game was a 1-0 win for Stockport at Tranmere on 12/10/09 which saw Tranmere's goalkeeper sent off. His lase QPR game was on 23/12/06 when Martin Rowlands scored the only goal in QPR's 1-0 home win over Barnsley.
