Ider down for the Gentry match

Last updated : 19 March 2015 By @pnemad

Eddie Ilderton started referring in the Northern Alliance and Northern League. He was encouraged to become a referee by his father when his playing career was curtailed due to injury, his father was a contributory league referee.

He joined the National List of Referees in 2002/03 and made his refereeing league debut on 10 August 2002 when Rochdale beat Leyton Orient 1-0. In 2002 he was appointed to the Football League Play Off Semi Finals and FA Youth Cup Final, both as an assistant referee. In 2003 he was officiated as a referee at the UEFA Regions’ Cup Finals, and also at an FA Trophy Semi Final.

In April 2014 he was left red-faced when he realised he had made a terrible decision to send off Sheffield United defender Kieron Freeman and award a penalty. The match official had no hesitation in pointing to the spot when Brentford striker Marcello Trotta was tackled in the Blades penalty area. Freeman couldn’t believe his eyes when the ref flashed the red card as he clearly played the ball but, after protests from his team-mates, he consulted his assistant Mark Dwyer. He then recalled Freeman from the stands and ordered a drop ball which a Brentford player petulantly booted for a goal kick.

Eddie Ilderton’s last match was a 3-1 win for MK Dons at Oldham on 17 March. His last Tykes match was a 4-3 win at Peterborough on 3 December 2011, the winner was scored by former PNE loanee Craig Davies.
