Eddie Ilderton started referring in the Northern Alliance and Northern League. He was encouraged to become a referee by his father when his playing career was curtailed due to injury, his father was a contributory league referee.

He joined the National List of Referees in 2002/03 and made his refereeing league debut on 10 August 2002 when Rochdale beat Leyton Orient 1-0. In 2002 he was appointed to the Football League Play Off Semi Finals and FA Youth Cup Final, both as an assistant referee. In 2003 he was officiated as a referee at the UEFA Regions' Cup Finals, and also at an FA Trophy Semi Final.

Eddie Ilderton's last match was in the Football League Trophy on 1 September as Stockport won 4-1 at Crewe. His last Swansea game was in 2006/07 season as the Swans drew 2-2 at Bradford which saw Swansea down to 10 men for the last five minutes following the dismissal of Kristan O'Leary.
