Nigel Miller started as a referee in 1989 and appointed to the National list of assistant referees in 1996. He spent some time on the Select Group list and was one of the assistants in the 2003 FA Cup Final when Arsenal beat Southampton.

He was promoted to National List referee in 2003 with his debut being a 2-2 draw between Huddersfield and Cambridge on 9 August 2003.

His last match was a 2-0 win for West Ham at Hull on 5 November. His last Southend match was a 2-0 defeat at Colchester on 8 February 2010.
