Nigel Millerstarted as a referee in 1989 and appointed to the National list of assistant referees in 1996. He spent some time on the Select Group list and was one of the assistants in the 2003 FA Cup Final when Arsenal beat Southampton.

He was promoted to National List referee in 2003 with his debut being a 2-2 draw between Huddersfield and Cambridge on 9 August 2003. He took charge of a League One Play-Off Seni-Final leg in 2012 between Sheffield United and Stevenage.

His last match was a 1-1 draw between York and Northampton on 6 November and produced his first red card of the season when the away side lost Louis Moult on 42 minutes. His last Brentford match was a 2-0 home victory against Oldham on 3 April 2012.
