James Adcock was introduced to refereeing by his father David and took his first refereeing course in 2000, at the age of 16; he was promoted to the Football League National List for 2011/12. At the age of 27 to became one of the youngest officials in the League.

He received confirmation of his promotion soon after returning from the States, where he took charge of the biggest international youth tournament in America. The opportunity to referee was by invitation only as the organisers nominated two Football League referees and one from the Conference which was Mr Adcock.

Prior to this season he had refereed one League Two match as Wycombe beat Macclesfield 1-0 on 26 February 2011. His final game last season was the Blue Square Premier Play-Off final between AFC Wimbledon and Luton.

His first match this season as a Football League Referee was a 1-1 draw between Oxford and Bradford on 13 August 2011.

His last match was a 3-3 draw between Yeovil and Crawley on 12 March. His previous Crewe match was the same score line at Sheffield United on 20 November 2012.
