Pearler for Dean

Last updated : 18 January 2010 By @pnemad

Mike Dean began refereeing in 1985. He became a Football League assistant referee in 1995 before progressing to the full referees' list in 1997. His first League game to take charge was a 3-2 victory for Barnet at Rotherham on 9 August 1997. He was appointed to the Select Group of referees for the Premier League in 2000 with his first top tier match being a 1-0 win for Leicester at home to Southampton. In 2003 he was subsequently promoted to the FIFA list in 2003 and was the fourth official for the FA Cup Final as Arsenal beat Southampton 1-0.

In 2004, he was appointed to the International Friendly as the Republic of Ireland beat Holland 1-0 in Amsterdam. In the same year, he took control of the FA Community Shield match as Arsenal beat Manchester United and the FA Trophy Final as Hendersford won 3-2 against Canvey Island.

He was originally appointed to referee the 2006 FA Cup but was replaced with Alan Wiley after concerns were raised about his ability to be impartial towards Liverpool due to being based close by in the Wirral. Eight days later he did make it to the Millennium Stadium via the Championship Play Off Final as Watford beat Leeds 3-0, although he finally refereed an FA Cup Final in 1998 as Portsmouth beat Cardiff 1-0.

Mike Dean has refereed two Chelsea matches this season with a 2-1 win at Stoke in September and lastly a 1-1 draw at West Ham on 20 December 2009.
