Andre Marriner began refereeing in 1992, by chance when he was asked to cover for a referee who did not turn up for a local match and progressed via the Birmingham Amateur Football League and the Southern Football League to become a Football League assistant referee in 2000.

He was appointed to the Football League list of referees in 2003. His first match saw a red card in 30 minutes as Simon Yeo saw two yellow cards in Lincolns 1-0 home defeat to Oxford on 9 August 2003. He was given his first Premier League appointment on 13 November 2004, as Charlton beat Norwich 4-0.

He was added to the Select Group of referees in 2005. In the same year, he refereed the FA Youth Cup final as Ipswich beat Southampton 3-2.

He was appointed as fourth official for the 2008 FA Community Shield match on 9 August as Manchester United beat Portsmouth on penalties after a 0-0 draw in normal time.

On 20 December 2008 he was invited to join the list of international referees for 2009 and was called up to officiate at the elite qualification stage for 2009 Euro Under-19s Championship, taking charge of Norway's 1-1 draw with Romania on 20 May 2009 and Romania's 3-0 defeat to France there three days later.

He was appointed to the 2010 League Championship play-off final as Blackpool beat Cardiff 3-2 at Wembley Stadium on 22 May.

On 17 April 2011, in a match between Arsenal and Liverpool, the match was goalless until Arsenal was awarded a penalty in the seventh minute of second-half stoppage time, and four minutes later awarded a second penalty to Liverpool. Both were converted, the latter in the 102nd minute which also became the League's latest-ever goal.

His last match was in the Europa League as AEK Larnaia beat M.Halfa 2-1 on 1 December. Previously he was the referee in a 3-3 draw between Wigan and Blackburn as Rovers David Dunn was sent off

After seven Premier League and one Championship match it is the first time he has refereed a League One tie this season.

This is the first time he has taken charge of a Lilywhite game since the 2009 Play-off semi-final against Sheffield United.

His last MK Dons game was further back as they lost 2-1 at home to Grimsby on 7 April 2007.
