Roger East joined the National List of assistant referees in 2000 before his promotion, in 2007, to the National List of referees. His first match as Referee was a 3-3 draw between Macclesfield and MK Dons on 18 August 2007.

As an assistant referee he was on the Select Group for four seasons and the FIFA list for two. Domestic highlights of his career include assistant referee appointments on the 2003 League Two Football League Play Off Final, the 2004 FA Cup Final and the 2006 Community Shield.

In 2006 he was an assistant at the Tripoli derby in Libya between Al Ittihad and Al Ahly, which finished 1-1. No Libyan officials could be appointed for fear of subsequent reprisals

He was the referee in a Semi-Final Play Off Leg when Stevenage beat Accrington 2-0 on 15 May 2011. The following season he took charge of the League One Play Off Final at Wembley when Huddersfield beat Sheffield United on penalties on 26 May.

He became a Premier League referee in 2012/13; his first match was a 2-2 draw between Swansea and Sunderland on 1 September. Swansea was reduced to 10 men when Chico was red carded on 71 minutes. So far this season he has been a referee at a Premier League on four occasions and has produced three of his five red cards in top tier games.

His last match was a 2-2 draw between Wolves and Leeds on 9 February 2013. His last Yeovil match was a 1-0 home defeat to Sheffield United on 22 September 2012
