Premier League ref sent to Coventry

Last updated : 20 December 2012 By @pnemad

Mike Jones started as a referee at the age of 15. After four years as an assistant referee he was appointed to the National List of referees in 1997/98. His first game was a 2-0 victory for Mansfield over Hull on 9 August 1997, whilst his first League One match as at Deepdale just under two months later. He was the fourth official for the 2004 Carling Cup Final and his senior refereeing appointments include 1997 Conference League Cup Final, 2005 FA Women’s Cup Final, and in 2007 the Division Two Play Off Final between Bristol Rovers and Shrewsbury at Wembley.

For the 2008/09 he was included into the Select Group of referees, His first Premier League match was the 5-0 win for Wigan at Hull in August and officiated the match between West Ham and Stoke when he sent off ex-northender Ricardo Fuller for slapping his captain.

In October 2009 Jones allowed to stand a bizarre goal scored by Darren Bent for Sunderland against Liverpool.  Bent's shot at goal took a deflection off a beach-ball which had been thrown onto the pitch by a fan in the Liverpool supporters' section. Under the laws of the game, the beach-ball should have been considered an "outside agent" and Jones should have disallowed the goal and awarded a drop-ball. He was demoted for one week to officiate a match in the Football League the following weekend.

He was the fourth official for the 2012 FA Cup Final on 5 May 2012.

His last match was a 2-0 home win for Arsenal at home to West Brom on 8 December 2012. His last Coventry match was a 2-1 home defeat to Portsmouth on 12 January 2010.
