Trevor Kettle started refereeing in 1983, reaching the National List of assistant referees in 1998, he was a Select Group assistant from 2000 until his promotion to the National List of Referees in 2003. His first match was a 4-2 home win for Swansea at home to Bury on 9 August 2003.

He has produced a red card in his last three matches including his previous game as Burnley drew 2-2 at Norwich on 6 November.

It is more than four years ago since Trevor Kettle was a referee at a Hull game. This was on 9 September 2006 in a 2-1 defeat at Birmingham with Hull being reduced to ten men in injury time when Jon Parkin was sent off for this second yellow of the match.
