Born in March 1963, Scott Mathieson has been a National list match official since 1990, spending four seasons on the line before being promoted to the referees list in 1994, his first match was between Carlisle and Wigan. He became a referee when he answered an advert in the Stockport Express looking for prospective referees. His early careers in refereeing were spent in and around his native Stockport and on the Cheshire League. In 2001 he officiated on the finals of The FA Vase and th Football League Cup which saw Liverpool beat Birmingham on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

In 2010 he was the referee in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Final at Wembley between Southampton and Carlisle.

His last Oldham match was a 1-1 draw at Sheffield United on 13 October 2012 in which both team received four yellow cards.

His last match was a 1-1 draw between Coventry and Brentford on 6 April
