Paul Tierney got into refereeing by going along to a local course after seeing an FA recruitment poster at a local sports club.

He was promoted to the select group of assistant referees in 2008 and in the same year was appointed as an assistant referee for a Football League Play Off Semi-Final between Rochdale and Darlington and a UEFA Cup tie.

He was appointed as a referee in 2009/10 and in his first match took charge of Notts.Co 4-0 win at Macclesfield on 15 August 2009.

His last Burnley match was a 1-0 defeat at Barnsley on 5 January 2013, which saw former PNE player Brian Stock sent off for two yellow cards on 37 minutes for the Clarets.

His last match saw  Coventry win 4-0 at Carlisle on 17 August.
