Eddie Ilderton started referring in the Northern Alliance and Northern League. He was encouraged to become a referee by his father when his playing career was curtailed due to injury, his father was a contributory league referee.

 

He joined the National List of Referees in 2002/03 and made his refereeing league debut on 10 August 2002 when Rochdale beat Leyton Orient 1-0. In 2002 he was appointed to the Football League Play Off Semi Finals and FA Youth Cup Final, both as an assistant referee. In 2003 he was officiated as a referee at the UEFA Regions’ Cup Finals, and also at an FA Trophy Semi Final.

Eddie Ilderton’s last match was tonight when Brighton beat FC United 4-0 in the FA Cup Third Round replay. His last Ipswich tie was a 3-1 home League Cup victory over Northampton on 26 October 2010
