Patterson joined Leigh RMI on a short term contract in December 2002 as he became Steve Waywell's assistant. Within the Month Waywell had joined Hyde and Patterson became manager of Leigh in January 2003. Leigh survived in the Conference and in a board room shake up he also became Commercial Manager in June 2003. But after a 4-1 home defeat by Barnet in October 2003, Patterson resigned as manager.

Patterson became manager of Chorley in November 2003 following the dismissal of Mark Molyneux and in February 2004 saw his side beat his former club Leigh RMI in the Lancashire Marsden Cup. Patterson left the club two months later.

Patterson replaced Neil Redfearn and his assistant Eric Winstanley at Scarborough prior to the start of the 2006/07 season. But the club, which has debts of over £2m, was compulsorily relegated from the Conference, and started the season in Conference North with 10 points deducted. They then failed to pay several players and, just three days into the season, the FA and Conference imposed an embargo, barring Scarborough from signing any more players until all outstanding wages were settled.

Due to injuries and a small playing squad Patterson, at the age of 41, had to register as a player. He left the club on 4 May 2007 by mutual consent, having failed to agree a new deal.
