Player Profile Peter Sayer

Peter Anthony Sayer was born in Cardiff on 2 May 1955. He started as a junior for his home town club and signed professional forms in July 1973. Sayer made his Cardiff debut on 28 September 1974 in a 2-1 home defeat against Hull. In April 1975 Sayer suffered a broken ankle at Southampton. At the end of the 1974/75 season Cardiff were relegated to Division Three.

The 1975/76 season saw Sayer help Cardiff regain their Division Two status by winning promotion.

His most famous match was in the FA Cup tie against Tottenham on 8 January 1977 in front of 28,000 fans at Ninian Park and the BBC Match of the Day cameras. A searing volley passed the outstretched arms of Pat Jennings in the sixth minute gave the Bluebirds a 1-0 lead which they never surrendered.

At the time the goal earned him a TR7 sports car donated by a local garage, a stint of opening shops and on the MOTD credits every week. Even today over 30 years later it is still fondly remembered as one of the best Cardiff goals of all time.

Sayer won seven international caps for Wales and made his debut on 30 March 1977 in a 3-0 victory against Czechoslovakia . A Leighton James penalty on 31 May gave Wales a 1-0 victory against England at Wembley and an £100 match fee for Sayer, this was the only time he played on the Wembley turf. After two 0-0 draws against Kuwait in September came the winner takes all World Cup qualifying match against Scotland in Liverpool on 12 October 1977. Sayer and John Toshack were the forwards but a 2-0 victory for Scotland led to Scotland reaching Argentina and virtually ending Sayer's international career.

Following his performance against Tottenham Sayer was being linked with numerous clubs including Liverpool as a replacement for Keegan who had left for Hamburg.

Sayer caught Alan Mullary's eye in a great display against Brighton at the Goldstone Ground and with Cardiff struggling for cash they agreed a fee of £100,000. Sayer moved to ambitious Brighton in February 1978 who was chasing promotion to the First Division. Sayer had made 82 appearances for Cardiff, scoring 14 goals.

Although they missed out on promotion in 1977/78, Sayer played in the team which gave the Seagulls promotion to Division One in the 1978/79 season. Brighton won 3-1 at Newcastle and finished runners-up to Crystal Palace.

Sayer played in the first 14 matches in Brighton's inaugural season in the top division before being replaced with ex PNE star Mark Lawrenson in midfield.

As Brighton brought in more new players Sayer became surplus to requirements and in August 1980 he dropped down a division to join Nobby Stiles at Preston for a fee of £85,000.

Sayer made his PNE debut in a 3-0 defeat at Sheffield Wednesday on 30 August 1980. Sayer suffered some bad injuries and was limited to just 8 appearances as Preston was relegated to Division Three in 1980/81.

The summer of 1981 saw Tommy Docherty arrive at Preston and Sayer didn't fit in with his plans and was loaned to Cardiff in September scoring one goal in four appearances. After 17 matches in four months Docherty was sacked but the 1981/82 season only saw Sayer make one appearance in a 3-1 home defeat against Brentford on 5 December.

After making 7 appearances between November 1982 to New Years Day, Sayer played the last 14 matches of the season. He scored the first of two goals for the season in a 1-0 home victory against Walsall on 29 March 1983. His other goal came in a victory against Orient in the following month.

Sayer played in the first match of the 1983 season and then scored in his next three league games. Sayer's last game for PNE was on 7 May in a 2-1 defeat at Walsall and had made 45 appearances for the Lilywhites, scoring 6 goals.

In July 1984 Sayer joined Chester, who was managed by a future PNE manager John McGrath, scoring 6 gaols in 36 appearances in the 1984/85 season.

Sayer moved into the non-league circuit with Northwich Victoria, Southport, Morecambe and Colne Dynamoes.

Follow the end of his playing career Sayer moved into the licensing trade running the Blue Bell pub in Church Street and worked in PNE's community scheme and commercial department.

Sayer later became the bar manager at Preston Golf Club.
