Player Profile – Kelham O’Hanlon

Kelham Gerard O’Hanlon was born in Saltburn on 16 May 1962. O’Hanlon started as an apprentice with Middlesbrough before signing a professional contract on his eighteenth birthday.

He had to wait until the 1982/83 season before making his debut for the second division club and made a total of 19 appearances during the season as the club finished in sixteenth position. He replaced former Northern Ireland goalkeeping Jim Platt in the number one jersey and the following season made 30 appearances as Boro finished one place lower.

The 1984/85 season saw O’Hanlon make 38 appearances as Middlesbrough just avoided relegation in nineteenth position. The signing of Stephen Pears from Manchester United led to the departure of O’Hanlon after 87 league appearances.

On 7 August 1985 O’Hanlon joined Third Division Rotherham and was an ever-present in his first season with the Millers. The 1987/88 season saw Rotherham relegated to Division four following a play off defeat.

After making two Under 21 International appearances for the Republic of Ireland he made his only full appearance for his country in a 5-0 victory over Israel in November 1987.

The 1988/89 season saw Rotherham win the Fourth Division title with O’Hanlon playing every league game.

His last season with the millers saw Rotherham relegated to the fourth tier and after 304 league appearances O’Hanlon joined Carlisle on 5 August 1991. The 1991/92 season saw O’Hanlon voted into the PFA Fourth Division team.

After two seasons with Carlisle and 83 appearances O’Hanlon joined Preston on 20 July 1993 and made his debut on the opening day of the 1993/94 season in a 2-0 defeat at home to Crewe on 14 August 1993.

O’Hanlon made 23 appearances during the season but could not move Stephen Woods from the number one shirt and left to join Dundee United at the end of the season.

O’Hanlon rejoined Preston in September 1996 and made his second debut on 21 January 1997 in a 1-0 defeat in the Auto Windscreen Shield and made 13 league appearances during the 1996/97 season.

O’Hanlon who had become assistant manager was called for one final appearance on 16 September 2000 as a substitute in a 1-1 draw at home to Stockport replacing the injured David Lucus. O’Hanlon had made 37 league appearances in total for the Lilywhites.

He was made caretaker manager in March 2002 after Moyes' departure to Everton  turning down the chance to follow Moyes to Everton two months later. O’Hanlon’s first game in charge was a 2-1 defeat at Burnley but four wins in the last six matches saw Preston finish eight. Although the players backed O’Hanlon for the job the club chose 61 year old former Scotland Manager Craig Brown as the new manager.

In June 2003, O'Hanlon left Preston due to cost-cutting measures and was appointed as a coach at Bury in January 2004, leaving in May 2005, again due to cost-cutting measures.

O'Hanlon took up a part-time position in February 2006 with Chester before being appointed as coach at Barnsley in January 2007 where he remained until September 2009 when former PNE colleague Simon Davey was sacked as the Tykes manager.

O’Hanlon then joined non- league AFC Fylde as first team coach before being appointed first team manager of the club on New Years Day 2010.
