Player Profile NORMAN WHARTON


Clarence Norman Wharton was born in Askam-in-Furness on 28 July 1903 and was a 6' 2 goalkeeper . After playing for Askam, Wharton signed for Division Three North side Barrow in 1922.


Wharton stayed at Barrow for three seasons making a total of 44 league appearances. Although Barrow finished third from bottom in 1922/23 and bottom in 1923/24. His performances alerted Second Division Preston to sign him in on 1 June1925 as Barrow finished 14 in 1924/25.


Jimmy Branston and George Prout were the first team goalkeepers for PNE. Wharton got his chance after Preston had lost to 3-0 at Port Vale in Prout's third appearance for the season.


Wharton made his debut in a 0-0 draw at home to Darlington on 2 April 1926. Wharton played in the remaining six matches of the season, winning three, drawing twice and losing only once.


The 1926/27 season saw Branston play the first four matches of the season. Wharton first game of the season on 13 September 1926 which was an eventful match as Preston played all but 3 minutes with ten men due to an injury to David Morris who had been hit in the eye with the lace of the ball. A last minute save helped PNE to a 2-1 victory at Wolves. Wharton played in the next five games winning three and just losing one. His final game for Preston was a 3-2 win at home to Grimsby on 9 October 1926. Wharton was replaced in goal for the remainder of the season by Tony Carr.


Wharton returned to Barrow on 1 June 1927 and made 27 further appearances. On 1 June 1928 Wharton signed for Sheffield United making 70 appearances in three years.


On 1 July 1931 Wharton signed for Norwich City for a fee of £250 and stayed for four years, making 101 league appearances. In 1933/34 Wharton helped Norwich win the Division Three South Championship with 61 points, seven points above Coventry , Reading and QPR. The title was won on 21 April, in a 3-1 victory against second place Coventry.


Wharton joined Doncaster on 31 May for the 1935/36 season, making just 5 league appearances before joining York on 1 June 1936. In three years Wharton made 117 league appearances.


On 1 August 1939, Wharton joined Leeds making his debut at home to Charlton in a 1-0 defeat. Four days later he played in the reverse fixture also ending in a 1-0 defeat.

His third appearance for Leeds in another 1-0 defeat, this time against Sheffield United on 2 September 1939 was to be his last. As it was for many footballers with the news on the following day that war had been declared, the league programme was immediately suspended.


By the time the league programme resumed on 31 August 1946 with Preston against Leeds, Wharton now 43 had long since retired.

Wharton passed away in 1961 in his home town of Askam.
