Player Profile - Eric Potts

Eric Thomas Potts was born in Liverpool on 16 March 1950 and was playing for Oswestry Town in the Cheshire League when he was spotted by Sheffield Wednesday in December 1969 and transferred for a fee of £5,000.

Potts made his league debut in a 3-2 win at home against Charlton on 17 October 1970 making 4 appearances for the Second Division side. It wasn't until the 1973/74 season before he became a regular in the side and scored his first league goal in a 3-1 win against West Brom on 12 September 1973. He netted 8 goals in 39 appearances during that season.

Potts was an ever-present in 1974/75, scoring 3 goals but couldn't help his side avoid relegation to Division Three. Potts scored 8 league goals again in 1975/76 including a brace in a 4-1 victory over Millwall on 11 October 1975.

Potts last appearance for the Owls was in a 1-0 defeat at Tranmere on 6 May 1977 and had scored 21 goals in 159 league appearances.

In June1977 Potts joined Brighton who had been newly promoted to Division Two and his one season with the Seagulls, they just missed out on promotion by finishing fourth. He had made 33 appearances, scoring 5 goals.

In August 1978 Potts joined Nobby Stiles at Preston for a fee of £37,000 and made his debut as a substitute for Ricky Thomson in a 2-2 draw at Deepdale against Sheffield United on 26 August. His first goals for PNE came in a brace as they beat Charlton 6-1 on 12 December. In total Potts scored 4 goals from 29 appearances during the 1978/79 as Preston finished seventh in Division Two.

The 1979/80 season saw Potts score his only league goal in the opening home fixture of the season from the penalty spot against Newcastle, he made 29 appearances.

After the third match of the 1980/81 season on 23 August which was a goalless draw against West Ham, he was transferred to Burnley for £20,000. Potts had scored 5 goals from 57 appearances for the Lilywhites.

Potts made his Claret's debut on 20 September 1980 in a 0-0 draw at Chester. Burnley finished eighth in Division Three and this was his only full season for the club, netting 4 goals from 35 appearances.

Potts made his last appearance was on 8 May 1982 as a replacement for Derek Scott in the 2-1 win at Turf Moor against Walsall. Potts eventually lost his place to a young Trevor Steven but made 21 appearances in 1981/82, scoring one goal as Burnley won the Third Division on goal difference above Carlisle.

In October 1982, Potts joined Fourth Division Bury scoring 5 goals in 31 appearances. After making a further 20 appearances in 1982/83, netting two goals he was released and joined non-league Witton Albion before playing for Clitheroe.
