Player Profile - John Bird

John Charles Bird was born in Doncaster on 9 June 1948. He signed for his home town club in March 1967 and made his debut in the 1967/68 season, appearing in 6 matches for the Fourth Division side. Bird made 9 appearances as Doncaster won the Fourth Division title in 1968/69.

After making 10 appearances in 1969/70 he scored his first goals in the 1970/71 season, scoring 3 in 25 appearances.

In March 1971 he left a Doncaster side who were heading for relegation to a Preston side which would win the Third Division title.

His debut came in a 0-0 draw at Bristol Rovers on 3 April and made a further 6 appearances for the remainder of the season the season.

The Second Division campaign of 1971/72 saw Bird as the only ever-present of the season and scored his first goal for the club in a 1-1 draw at Norwich on 22 January.

Bird only missed one match in 1972/73 but saw the club relegated in 1973/74 with him making 28 appearances and scoring in victories at home to Nottingham Forest and away at Bolton. He made his 100th league appearance on Boxing Day in the 1-0 home defeat to Carlisle

Bird was an ever-present for the second time in 1974/75 when he scored three goals.

His last appearance for Preston was on 27 August 1975 in a 0-0 League Cup second leg match at Blackburn.

Bird joined First Division Newcastle in a move shrouded in controversy when the Preston Board sold him to the Magpies with Alex Bruce returning to Preston plus £60,000, without the knowledge of manager Bobby Charlton. Charlton subsequently resigned in protest over the transfer.

Bird made his debut in a 4-0 defeat at Manchester City on 30 August and made a total of 20 appearances during the season, scoring one goal. He only made 5 appearances in 1976/77 and 26 appearances in 1977/78 when the club was relegated to Division Two.

The most appearances and goals for Newcastle came in the 1978/79 season with 3 goals from 27 appearances.

Bird lost his place to Stuart Boam and in July 1980 he joined Hartlepool after scoring 5 goals from 87 appearances for Newcastle.

Bird scored 4 goals from 45 appearances for the Fourth Division side and scored 6 goals from 42 appearances in 1981/82. The next two seasons saw Hartlepool suffer re-election before hanging up his boots in the 1984/85 season.

Bird remained at Hartlepool as a coach before being appointed manager as replacement to Billy Horner on 1 November 1986. Hartlepool finished mid-table in 1986/87 but were relegated to Division Four in 1987/88. After 32 wins and 35 defeats as manager in 94 matches Bird left Hartlepool and joined York City on 1 October 1988.

Bird was manager at York for just over three years until 23 October 1991 and was manager for 155 matches with 46 wins and 61 defeats.

Bird also managed Halifax and had a spell as coach to his home town club Doncaster.

During his time at Newcastle he opened his own Art Gallery, which he successfully ran for eight years holding several exhibitions.

He now has an art studio in Bawtry, Doncaster and his paintings have been sold all over the world, recipients include Prince Edward and the Duchess of Wessex, The Governor of Hong Kong, Lesley Garrett and Russell Crowe.
