Player Profile Scott Gemmill

Scot Gemmill was born in Paisley on 2 January 1971 and is the son of Archie Gemmill who made 101 league appearances and scored 13 goals for Preston from 1967 to 1970.

Gemmill began as a trainee with Nottingham Forest and signed full terms in 1990. He made his debut as a substitute in a 3-1 defeat at Wimbledon on 30 March 1991.

The 1991/92 season saw Gemmill grab a first eleven position, scoring 8 goals in 39 appearances. But the following season Forest finished bottom of the Premiership and Gemmill's only goal was in a 2-1 defeat at Tottenham in December 1992.

The 1993/94 season saw Forest finish runners-up Division One with again Gemmill scoried 8 league goals during the season.

The following season saw Forest finish third in the Premiership, although Gemmill only played in 19 matches and score one goal.

Forest were relegated again in 1996/97 as Gemmill made 24 appearances but couldn't find the net. The 1997/98 season saw Forest as Champions of Division One with Gemmil lonly missing two matches. He made his 200 th league appearance in a 1-0 win at Ipswich on 29 November 1997.

After 245 league appearances and 21 goals Gemmill joined Walter Smith at Everton for a fee of £250,000 on 25 March 1999, just minutes before the 5pm transfer deadline. He made his debut in a 3-2 defeat at Liverpool on 3 April and scored his first goal in a 3-1 win at Newcastle on 17 April 1999.

The 1999/2000 season he was limited to just 14 matches due to injuries and scored one goal at Sheffield Wednesday in September 1999. Having recovered full fitness, he found it hard to recover his place after the signings of Stephen Hughes, Mark Pembridge and Abel Xavier. Gemmill made 28 appearances in 2000/01 and his two goals came in the matches against Coventry.

His most appearances in a season for Everton came in 2001/02 when he made 32 and the one goal he scored against Middlesbrough on 25 August took Everton to the top of the Premiership, albeit briefly.

David Moyes replaced Walter Smith as Everton manager and Gemmill found it more difficult to get in the side. His last game for Everton was on 3 May 2003 in a 2-0 defeat at Everton.

The 2003/04 season saw Gemmill suffer an injury and on return to fitness he could not get anywhere near the first team. In total Gemmill had made 97 appearances for Everton, scoring 5 goals.

In March 2004 Gemmill joined Preston on a month's loan. He made his debut in a 0-0 draw at home to Gillingham on 13 March. He scored the winner in a 1-0 win at home to Bradford on 3 April as Gemmill latched onto Dickson Etuhu's pass and slipped the ball past goalkeeper Alan Combe with the first attack of the second half.
He made his 7 th and final appearance for the Lilywhites in a 2-2 draw against Nottingham Forest on 12 April, when he had to be substituted due to a knee injury.

Following his release from Everton, Gemmill joined Micky Adams at Leicester in August 2004.

He made his debut on 21 August in a 1-0 home defeat against Watford . He initially joined the Foxes on a three-month deal; this was extended by a further month in October by caretaker boss Dave Bassett after Micky Adams had quit as manager.

Craig Levein became the new manager and agreed a further three-month contract for Gemmill in November; this was extended in February 2005 to the end of this season.

Gemmill didn't manage to obtain a new contract for 2005/06 season and played his 17 th and final match on 8 March in a 0-0 draw at Burnley .

In January 2006 Gemmill had a trial with Sheffield Wednesday but later joined Oxford as player coach in March 2006 but after two weeks and one game at Mansfield on 1 April 2006 he left to join New Zealand Knights on better terms and a 2 year deal.

Gemmill received 27 international caps for Scotland ; he made his debut in a 0-0 draw against Japan on 21 May 1995. He scored one goal in the 4-0 victory against an Hong Kong XI on 21 May 2002.
