Player Profile - Graham Houston

Graham Robert Houston was born in Gibraltar on 24 February 1960. He started with the juniors at Preston before signing professionally in March 1978.

Houston made his debut as a substitute for Brian Taylor in a 3-0 defeat at home to Q.P.R. a day before his 20th birthday and was his only appearance in the 1979/80 season.

His full debut was made on 26 August 1980 against Wigan at Deepdale in a 1-0 victory in the First Round First Leg of the League Cup. Houston scored two goals during the season; the first was in the 4-3 defeat at home to Bristol Rovers in the FA Cup Third Round after Rovers led 4-0 at half time. He made 17 league appearances during the season and his one league goal came in a 2-1 home victory against Sheffield Wednesday on 14 April 1981 but could not help Preston avoid relegation to Division Three.

The only season were he played the majority of matches came in 1983/84 when Houston made 41 appearances, including 18 as a substitute, scoring three goals. The first of the goals was the 1-0 win at Bournemouth on the opening day of the season.

More than half of his career league goals for Preston came in the 1984/85 season with 5 from 31 appearances, again Houston scored on the opening day of the season in a 2-0 win at home to Doncaster. This was one of the few highlights of the season as PNE conceded 100 goals and was relegated to Division Four for the first time.

His only appearances in 1985/86 were in the Freight Rover Trophy with his last match for the Lilywhites was a 2-0 win at home to Bury on 29 January 1986.

Houston joined Burnley on a non-contract basis but never made a first team appearance as he didn't get past the reserve side.

In June 1986 Houston joined Third Division Wigan and made 17 appearances, scoring four goals. Although Wigan finished fourth missing promotion by two points he was released at the end of the season.

After a short spell with non-league Northwich Victoria, Houston joined Fourth Division Carlisle in October 1987 and his one season with them he scored once in 16 appearances.
