Player Profile DEREK MAYERS

Derek Mayers was born in Liverpool on 24 January 1935. Mayers was a pacy right winger who signed professional forms for Everton in August 1952 after coming through their junior ranks.

Although he scored two goals on his debut for Everton, Mayers time at Everton was mainly spent in the reserves and made only 18 league appearances in five seasons, scoring 7 goals.

On 31 May 1957 Mayers joined Preston for a fee of £2,000 and scored on his debut in a 3-1 home win against Tottenham on 14 September 1957. Mayers also scored a brace in a 3-1 win against his former club. Mayers scored a goal in a 4-1 win against Leicester in March 1958 which was best remembered for two missed penalties by Tom Finney. The final game of the season saw Mayers score twice again in a 3-0 victory at home to Arsenal. The 12 goals in 34 appearances saw PNE finish runners up to Wolves by five points in the First Division.

The 1958/59 season saw PNE finish mid-table as Mayers scores seven times in 37 appearances. His first goal of the season in September was again against his former club Everton.

The following season saw Mayers score 4 goals in 19 appearances. The first of these was on the opening day of the season as PNE drew 4-4 at Chelsea. The remaining three goals came in consecutive matches in November 1959 in victories at Fulham and Luton with a home win in between against Bolton.

His final season for PNE was in 1960/61 making his 100th league appearance for the club in his tenth appearance of the season as PNE lost 3-0 at Wolves in November 1960. Mayers made a further 18 league appearances during the season scoring his final goal in a 1-0 win at Blackpool on 18 February 1961. His last appearance was on 15 April 1960 in a 1-0 defeat at Aston Villa. Mayers had scored 26 goals in 118 league appearances for the Lilywhites. This season, one year after Tom Finney's retirement saw PNE finish bottom of the first division. Following relegation, Mayers left the club along with Fred Else, Sammy Taylor and Tommy Thompson as they were replaced by members of the Youth Cup winning side.

Mayers became one of Don Revie's first signings in June 1961 when he signed for a fee of £2,000.

But he only made 20 appearances for Leeds in his only season for the club as they finished fourth from bottom. He scored five goals during the season. The first was the opening goal in a 3-1 win at Brighton on 22 August 1961. Two further goals were scored before the end of the year in matches at Middlesbrough and Derby. His last two goals were scored in a space of four days. Mayers scored from the spot in a 2-1 defeat at Scunthorpe. His last goal was the only one scored at Elland Road on 24 February 1962 in a 3-2 defeat against Plymouth.

Mayers joined Bury for £1,000 in July 1962 and scored 6 goals in 32 appearances. In October 1963 Mayers joined his last club in Britain by signing for Wrexham for a fee of £2,500. Mayers scored twice in 21 appearances in the 1963/64 season for Wrexham.

Mayers finished his footballing career in the Australian Leagues.

Mayers returned to England and following his retirement at 60, he played golf three times a week and saw him compete in the Jimmy Tarbuck classic in Portugal.
