Player Profile - ARCHIE GEMMILL

Archibald Gemmill was born in Paisley , Renfrewshire on March 24th 1947. He was signed by St. Mirren in the 1963/64 season and made his debut the following season. Gemmill had a succession of injuries at the start of the 1965/66 season. He missed the first three months with a leg injury and then suffered a broken ankle in a reserve game. Gemmill became the first official substitute in Scottish Football when he replaced Jim Clunie in a League Cup tie against Clyde in August 1966. He scored a hat-rick against Ayr on Christmas Eve 1966 and finished top scorer with 5 goals.

In June 1967 he signed for PNE for £13,000. Gemmill scored on his debut coming on as a replacement for Jim McNab in a 3-1 win at Norwich . Gemmill scored 4 league goals in his first season for PNE including a brace at home to Charlton in a 4-1 win as Preston finished 4 points clear of relegation in the second division.

He finished top scorer with 6 goals in the season 1969/70 as Preston was relegated to the third division for the first time.

Gemmill's 100th game was a 4-1 win at home to Reading . The following week was his last game for PNE in a 2-0 defeat at Aston Villa on September 19th 1970. Gemmill had expected to sign for £70,000 to the reigning champions Everton on a four year contract with a £5,000 signing on fee and weekly pay rising to £300, until Brian Clough drove to his house to persuade him to sign for Derby . Gemmill initially said no but Clough would not take no for an answer and stayed the night at the Gemmills. Over fried eggs the following morning he signed for Derby for £60,000 with a weekly wage of £70, a colour TV and a carpet.

Gemmill made his debut for Derby on September 26th in a 2-1 defeat at West Brom . He scored three goals during the 1970/71 season against Nottingham Forest , Manchester United and Wolves.

Gemmill won a First Division championship medal the following season as Derby kept 23 clean sheets.

Gemmill scored in the first round of the 1972/73 European Cup against Zeljenicar Sarajevo. Gemmill was suspended for the second leg semi-final against Juventus which finished in a goalless draw. The match was controversial as it was alleged that Juventus forward Helmut Haller had visited the referee Gerhard Schulenberg during half time. Derby losing 3-1 on aggregate.

Gemmill became club captain as he replaced Roy McFarland winning his second league title in 1975.

Clough sought to take the nucleus of Derby's championship winning side with John O'Hare and John McGovern at Nottingham Forest . Gemmill joined Forest in September 1977 for £25,000 with goalkeeper John Middleton going to Derby .

He went straight into the Forest side and in the 34 games he played in the 1977/78 Forest only lost twice winning his third league title and the second under Clough

He played 58 times for Forest scoring three goals. Gemmill was dropped for the European Cup Final in Munich and left the club at the start of 1979/80 season.

Gemmill made is debut for Birmingham on August 18th 1979 in a 4-3 home defeat against Fulham eventually playing in 97 league games for the Blues and scoring 12 goals.

Gemmill moved to America to play for the Jackson Tea Men in early 1982 but only stayed for one season making 32 league games.

Gemmill then joined up with a former Forest colleague Larry Lloyd at Wigan making his debut on September 25th 1982 against Chesterfield but only stayed for 11 matches.

Gemmill returned to Derby as player-coach in September 1982 as Peter Taylor's first signing. In two spells he made 324 appearances and 25 goals making his last appearance for Derby on May 12th 1984 against Shrewsbury .

He returned to Forest to coach alongside Clough in 1984 and managed Rotherham in the mid 1990 for two seasons.

Gemmill is famous for his goal in the 1978 World Cup against Holland in a Group D fixture. After scoring a penalty to give Scotland a 2-1 lead. Gemmill, in the 68th minute ran around three Dutch defenders to score. The goal has been translated into song, dance and mentioned in the movie 'Trainspotting'.

Gemmill played 43 times for Scotland scoring 8 goals and in his international career he was dropped in his support for Alan Hansen and Graham Souness, had the captaincy withdrawn from him and had a three year exile after a defeat by England .

Gemmill is currently coach to the Scottish under 19 squad and has just published his autobiography 'Both Sides Of The Border', in which the foreword, written before his death, Clough revealed he had never seen Gemmill play before he signed him.
