Player Profile – MATT JACKSON
Matthew Alan Jackson will be starting in 17th league season having made almost 500 league appearances for 8 clubs winning 10 England under 21 caps.
He was born in Leeds on 19th October 1971. Having signed for Luton in July 1990 he didn't make his league debut until he went on loan to Preston in March 1991. This was as substitute for Jeff Wrightson in a 5-1 win against Crewe. His Centre Half partner that afternoon was another ex-canary Mike Flynn. Jackson made the starting eleven in three games against Bury, Cambridge & Swansea. PNE didn't win any of them and Les Chapman's team finished in 17th place at the end of the season in Division Three. This was when there were still Divisions 1 to 4.
During 1991/92 Jackson made 9 appearances for Luton before Everton signed him in October 1991 for £600,000. Between 1991/92 and 1995/96 seasons he made 138 appearances for the Toffees scoring 4 goals, winning an F.A. Cup winners' medal in 1995. During 1996 he was loaned out to Charlton, Q.P.R. and Birmingham.
He became Mike Walker's first signing at Norwich when he paid £450,000 for him in December 1996 after Norwich had conceded 5 goals at West Brom and 6 goals at Port Vale.
He was quickly appointed captain and was voted player of the year in 1998. Prior to the start of the 2000/01 season Sheffield Wednesday's manager Paul Jewell made a £500,000 bid for Jackson which was turned down.
In July 2001 Nigel Worthington had to reduce the wage bill and Jackson was made available on a free transfer. He had played 161 league games and scored 6 goals for Norwich.
Numerous clubs in Divisions 1, 2 & 3 were interested in Jackson. But Paul Jewell's finally succeeded in obtaining his signature for Wigan, initially on loan in October 2001, before being made permanent on 20th November 2001. His partnership with Jason De Vos lead to the Latics winning Division 2 in the 2002/03 season. Once De Vos had departed for Ipswich his partnership with Ian Breckin led to promotion to the Premiership in the 2004/05 season.
Jackson has made 147 appearances scoring 3 goals for Wigan. Despite not being a first choice name for the Latics during their debut season in the Premiership, making just 15 appearances. He has been rewarded with a new one year contract for the 2006/07 season.
