Player Profile Craig Burley


Craig William Burley was born in Irvine, Scotland on 24 April 1971 and is the nephew of the new Scottish Manager George Burley.


Burley started his career with Chelsea and made his debut as a substitute for Kerry Dixon in the 7-0 defeat by Nottingham Forest on 20 April 1991 and made his full debut the following season in a 1-1 draw with Southampton . Injuries and loss of form limited him to just 3 appearances in 1992/93.


Following the arrival of Glen Hoddle in the summer of 1993, Burley finally got a run in the first team from November and scored his first goal for the club in January 1994. He scored 3 goals from 23 appearances in 1993/94 and played in the FA Cup Final defeat to Manchester United. The 1994/95 saw Burley score twice in 25 matches and made a further 53 appearances, scoring twice in the following two seasons winning his first medal in 1997 as part of the Chelsea team that beat Middlesbrough 2-0 in the FA Cup.


After 114 league appearances and 7 goals Burley became one of Wim Jansen's Celtic signings when he joined them for £2.5m in July 1997.


Burley made his Celtic debut on 3 August 1987 in a 2-1 defeat at Hibs. His first goals were a brace in a 3-2 win at Motherwell on 13 September. Two further braces saw Burley score 13 goals for the season as Celtic broke Rangers dominance to win the League for the first time in a decade and a Scottish League Cup winners medal. Also Burley and was voted the Scottish Premier League Player of the Year in 1997/98 by the Scottish Football Writers Association.


His first league appearance in 1998/99 saw Burley score a hat-trick in a 5-0 win against Dunfermline . After 64 appearances and 20 goals Burley joined Derby in December 1999 for £3m.


Burley made his Rams debut in a 1-0 home defeat to Leeds on 5 December 1999, his first goal was in a 4-1 win at Middlesbrough on 15 January 2000 and scored a brace in a 4-4 draw at Bradford in April. His first season for Derby saw Burley score 5 goals from 18 appearances.


Burley scored twice from 24 appearances in 2000/01 and was appointed club captain just before the start of 2001/02. But after 11 appearances Burley suffered a serious injury on 24 November 2001 in a 1-0 defeat at Newcastle which kept him out for a year.

Burley returned on 25 November 2002 in a 3-2 win at home to MK Dons. His last appearance for the Rams was a 4-1 home defeat against Ipswich on 4 May 2003 before being released. Burley had scored 10 goals from 73 league appearances.


Burley returned to Scotland by joining Dundee and made his debut in a 1-1 draw in the Dundee derby on 26 October 2003. His second appearance also a 1-1 draw saw Burley sent off. This was his last appearances for the club as Dundee went into administration and was released.


Burley joined Preston in January 2004 and made his debut on 7 February as a substitute for Paul McKenna in a 3-0 win at Deepdale against West Brom . After two further substitute appearances in the defeats at Watford and at home to Millwall, Burley made his only starting appearance for PNE in a 2-0 defeat at Ipswich on 28 February. This was his last appearance for the Lilywhites before joining Walsall in March 2004.


His first appearance for Walsall was in a 2-1 win at Preston on 20 March. Burley also played against another old club in a 1-0 win at Derby , before making his fifth and final league appearance in a 5-0 defeat at Norwich on 17 April 2005.

Burley made 46 appearances for Scotland . His debut was in a 0-0 draw against Japan in Hiroshima on 21 May 1995. Burley scored three international goals, his first came in a 2-2 draw against Colombia on 23 May 1998. Burley also scored in France 98 in a 1-1 draw against Norway on 16 June but was sent off 10 days later in a 3-0 defeat against Morocco . Burley's final goal was in the European Championship Qualifier in a 2-1 win against Faroe Islands on 14 October 1998.


After a gap of 18 months Burley was recalled to the Scotland side in a 2-0 defeat against Austria on 30 April 2003 but then announced his international retirement.


Burley is now a TV pundit with the media company Sentana.
