Player Profile - Rob Edwards

Robert William (Rob) Edwards was born in Kendal on 1 July 1973. Edwards started his career with Fourth Division Carlisle making 12 appearances in the 1989/90 season. The following season Edwards made a further 36 appearances, scoring 5 goals with 4 coming from the penalty spot before joining Bristol City on 27 March 1991 for £135,000.

Edwards could not hold down a first team place initially making 20 appearances with one goal in 1991/92 and 18 appearances in 1992/93. The 1993/94 Edwards made 38 appearances the most in one season for the Robins netting two goals.

The 1994/95 season saw Bristol City relegated from Division One when they finished 23rd with Edwards making 30 appearances. Appearances were limited to 19 appearances in the 1995/96 season due to glandular fever.

Edwards retuned to fitness in 1996/97 to make 31 appearances including the first leg play off defeat at home to Brentford. Edwards also received a red card in the Bristol derby draw as Ashton Gate on 15 December. After making 17 Welch 21 appearances and 2 Welch 'B' caps he made the first of four full appearances in the Welch national side.

Edwards won promotion back to Division One in 1997/98 in making 37 appearances but missed a number of games due to injury as the Robins suffered relegation again the following season. Due to Edwards rejecting a new contract in the summer of 1999 his last appearance for Bristol City after eight years in a 1-0 defeat at Crewe on 27 April 1999. He had made 216 league appearances, scoring 5 goals before joining Preston on 5 August.

Edwards's debut for Preston came on the opening day of the 1999/2000 season when Edwards replaced Dominic Ludden in a 1-0 win at Oldham. His first goal came in the 4-1 Auto Windowscreen match against Wrexham on 7 December. Preston won the Division Two title making 41 appearances and scoring 2 league goals. The following season saw Edwards make 41 appearances but ended in disappointment as Preston lost the Play Off Final against Bolton. After making 36 appearance and scoring in consecutive games in the space of three days in 2001/02.

His final two seasons at Preston were limited due to injuries making 26 appearances in 2002/03 and 24 appearances in 2003/04. His final appearance was in the 2-2 draw at home to Nottingham Forest on 12 August 2004 when he was replaced by Andy Smith. Edwards had made 169 league appearances for PNE, netting 5 goals.

Edwards moved down the M55 to join Blackpool in August 2004 and made 26 appearances. He scored his only goal for Blackpool on his second appearances in a 2-1 home defeat to Sheffield Wednesday on 10 August 2004. The following season he made a further 32 appearances.

Edwards left Blackpool at the end of the 2005/06 season; his last appearance was in a 3-3 draw against Gillingham on 6 May 2006. After playing on trial with his first Club Carlisle and then Rochdale Edwards signed for Conference side Exeter. Since signing for the Grecians in 2006, he has since established himself as a first team regular in the heart of the defence for Exeter City and in December 2007, City Manager Paul Tisdale appointed Edwards as player-coach at Exeter: coaching the reserves, while still being a member of the first team. He was the only member of the squad to start in all 46 matches of Exeter's 2007/08 campaign. That season culminated in Edwards scoring the winning goal at Wembley on 18 May 2008 in Exeter's Play Off final win over Cambridge securing the club's return to the Football League following an absence of five years.

Edwards has continued to pay a pivotal role in the Division Two campaign of 2008/09 and made his 100th league appearance for Exeter last month in a 3-1 win at Port Vale.
