Player Profile - Matt Hill

Matthew Clayton Hill was born in Bristol on 26 March 1981. He came though the Youth set up for his home town club before signing a professional contract in February 1999.

His debut for Bristol City came in a 6-1 home defeat to Wolves on 7 November 1999; the match became famous following a scrap between the mascots of both clubs. Hill went on to make a further two appearances during the season as the Robins finished bottom of Division One.

The 2000/01 season saw him win the Bristol City Young Player of the Year

It wasn't until January 2000 when he became a regular in the side making 14 appearances for the Second Division side. Prior to that he had suffered knee ligament damage but still won the City's Player of the Year award and the Yong Player of the Year for the second successive season

The 2001/02 season saw Hill score his first goal in a 2-1 win at Swindon on 13 January 2002. He made 40 appearances during the season as Bristol City just finished outside a play-off position.

The following season he did help the Robins win the LDV Vans Trophy in a 2-1 win over Carlisle. Bristol City did also reach the Play Off semi-Final but were beaten over two legs against Cardiff. Hill played in both legs and scored 3 goals in 42 league appearances.

The Robins went one better in 2003/04 with Hill playing in the Play Off final at Cardiff was they were beaten 1-0 with a late penalty against Brighton. He had made 42 league appearances again and netted two goals.

His last appearance came on 28 December 2004 in a 0-0 draw against Hartlepool and had scored 6 goals from 198 appearances.

Hill joined Preston on 10 January 2005 for a fee of £100,000 and made his debut five days later in a draw against Leicester. He made 14 appearances and played in the Championship Play Off Final defeat against West Ham at Cardiff.

Appearances were limited to 26 appearances in 2005/06 as he suffered a number of injuries including a sickening clash of heads with Plymouth Paul Connolly. He suffered his fourth Play Off defeat has he played in the first leg draw at Leeds, but did not play in the second leg defeat.

He was the fans' Player of the Year award in 2006/07 making 38 league appearances. He signed a new two year contract in July 2007 but due to the form of Callum Davidson lost his left back place and made 26 appearances during the 2007/08 season.

After playing in the 1-0 League Cup defeat on 26 August 2008 against Derby, Hill joined Wolves on 1 September 2008 for an undisclosed fee which saw Stephen Elliott join PNE from Wolves. Although he came close on numerous occasions he was unable to score a goal for the Lilywhites in 105 league appearances.

Due to injury he made his Wolves debut on 7 December in a 3-0 win also against Derby and went on to make 13 appearances during the 2008/09 seson as Wolves won the Championship title.

The 2009/10 season will see him play in the Premier League for the first time.
