Player Profile - Sidney Chandler

Sidney Ellis Chandler was born in London on 30 May 1901. He was unable to break into the Aston Villa side and joined Preston just before the start of the 1926/27 season.

Chandler made his Preston debut on the opening day of the season in a 2-2 draw against Clapham Orient. His first league goal came in his sixth appearance in a 1-1 draw against Southampton on 18 September 1926. He started as a right back before moving to inside-right. Chandler only missed only match during the season and was second top scorer with 11 goals. This included two braces in consecutive matches as Preston won at Blackpool and at home to Reading, a third brace came in the win against South Shields.

The following season he was limited to just 19 appearances and made just 5 appearances in 1928/29. His only goal of that season came in a 2-2 draw against Swansea Town on 20 October and his final appearance for PNE came in a fortnight later in a 5-2 victory over Clapham Orient. He had scored 12 goals in 65 appearances.

Chandler joined Second Division Reading and became a fixture in the team as he scored once in 29 appearances for the Royals.

Chandler was an ever-present in the side during 1929/30; the following season saw Chandler make 13 appearances as Reading were relegated to Division Three South at the end of the 1931/32 season. Chandler made a total of 84 appearances for the Royals.

Chandler joined non-league side Canterbury Waverley and passed away in 1961.
