Player Profile - Jackie Palethorpe

John Thomas (Jackie) Palethorpe was born in Leicester on 23 November 1909 and played Centre Forward.

Palethorpe started his career with Maidenhead United before joining Third Division South side Crystal Palace in 1929.

The following season he joined Second Division side Reading after not being able to break in the first team for Palace. Palethorpe scored twice in 4 appearances as Reading were relegated to Division Three South.

He became a regular in the 1931/32 season as he finished top scorer with 23 goals from 28 appearances as the Royals finished runners up to Fulham. Unfortunately only the champions of the North and South divisions were promoted.

The 1932/33 season saw a ration of more than one goal per game as he finished top scorer again with 29 goals from 27 games before joining Second Division Stoke. His 8 goals from 10 games help the Potters win promotion to the First Division.

After 3 goals from 11 appearances Palethorpe joined Second Division Preston in January 1934 and made his debut on the 20 January in a 2-1 home defeat against Grimsby. His next two matches saw him score a brace in each match with victories at home to West Ham and at Nottingham Forest. A hat-trick in a 5-0 win at home to Northampton in the FA Cup Fifth Round saw him score 7 goals from his first 5 matches. In total is scored 11 goals from 18 league appearances during the season as Preston finished runners-up to Grimsby to win promotion to the First Division.

Palethorpe scored on his last Preston appearance in a 4-2 home defeat against Manchester City on 8 December after scoring a total of 15 goals from 24 league appearances.

Palethorpe joined Sheffield Wednesday and scored 8 goals from 20 appearances including a hat-trick in a 4-0 win at Birmingham on Boxing Day. Wednesday finished third in the First Division in 1934/35.

After scoring 5 goals from 8 appearances in the 1935/36 season Palethorpe joined Aston Villa and scored twice in 6 appearances but couldn't helped the club avoid relegation to the Second Division with Blackburn.

For the 1936/37 season Palethorpe rejoined Crystal palace and scored 8 goals from 29 appearances. The following season he made a further 10 appearances, scoring 3 goals before moving into non-league with Chelmsford City and later with Shorts Sports and Colchester United.

He passed away in 1984.
