Player Profile - Mike Conroy

Michael Kevin Conroy was born in Glasgow on 31 December 1965.

Conroy began his career with Coventry in 1983. Unable to break into the first team, he moved back to his native Scotland in 1984 to sign with Clydebank on a free transfer. In three years with the Bankies, he made 114 league appearances and scored 38 goals.

In 1987 he joined St.Mirren for ten months, scoring one goal in ten appearances for the Buddies.

He returned to England in September 1988 to join Third Division Reading in 1988 in a £50,000 deal. He spent three years at Elm Park and in 1988/89 saw him score 4 goals in 13 appearances. But found himself in midfield as the goals had dried up as he scored twice in 34 appearances in 1989/90 and just one from 33 appearances in 1990/91. In total he had scored seven times from 80 appearances.

Conroy joined Burnley in July 1991 for £35,000 and made his debut at Rotherham on 17 August 1991. Conroy scored in his first four games, although the goal against Aldershot has now been wiped from the records. He reached double figures by Christmas and scored his only hat-trick against Gillingham in a 4-1 win on 18 January 1992. He netted 24 league goals in 38 appearances plus a further 5 goals in the cups as Burnley won the Fourth Division title.

He found goals more difficult to come in the 1992/93 season as he linked up with new signing Adrian Heath with 6 goals from 39 appearances. His last appearance was at Stoke on 8 May 1993 as he was one of a number of players deemed surplus to requirements by manager Jimmy Mullen having scored 30 league goals from 77 appearances.

Conroy joined Preston in August 1993 for £85,000 and made his debut as a substitute for Micky Norbury in a 4-3 win at Scarborough on 21 August 1993. His home debut and first full start saw him score a hat-trick in a 6-1 win against Shrewsbury a week later. His goals dried up towards the end of the season and weren't involved in the Play-Off Final defeat at Wembley against Wycombe. But he finished as second top scorer on 13 goals from 32 appearances.

The 1994/95 season saw him finish top scorer with 10 league goals from 25 appearances including a brace in a 2-1 win at Mansfield and also in a 5-0 win against Bury. His most famous goal was the in the 1-0 victory in the televised FA Cup match against Blackpool on 14 November 1994.

After 22 goals from 57 appearances Conroy joined Third division Fulham in August 1995 for £75,000. His first league goal for the club was his 100th of his senior career. He scored a further 8 goals during the 1995/96 season in 40 appearances.

The 1996/97 season saw Fulham promoted as the Runners-up in Division Three. Conroy was top scorer with 21 goals from 43 appearances scoring a brace twice in home wins against Colchester and Cambridge. His performances earning him the clubs Player of the Year Award and a place in the PFA Divisional team for the season.

Injuries limited him in 1997/98 and after 32 goals in 94 appearances, his last goal for the club was in October 1997, scoring the only goal against Blackpool. It was Blackpool who Conroy joined next in March 1998 for a fee of £50,000.

He struggled to break into the side and just made 14 appearances and was unable to find the net. The 1998/99 season saw him go on loan twice for Chester scoring three goals in 15 appearances. His last league game was a 3-1 defeat at Rochdale on 17 April 1999.

Conroy whose wife is from Australia moved Down Under to play for Carlton. In 2000 he joined Eastern Pride, with whom he finished his playing career when they went out of business the following year.

Conroy has remained in Australia as a Coach.
