Player Profile - Julian Darby

Julian Timothy Darby was born in Farnworth on 3 October 1967. He began his career with Bolton, signing professional forms on 22 July 1986 and made 2 appearances in his debut season for the Third Division club in 1985/86.

Although the following season Bolton was relegated via a play off, Darby made 28 appearances and wore nine different outfield shirts. His first league goals came in 1987/88 with 2 goals from 35 appearances as Bolton finished third and promoted from Division Four.

The following season saw him score in every competition including a 27th minute equaliser against Torquay in the Sherpa Van Final at Wembley. He was an ever-present in 1989/90 with 10 goals and just missed one league game with 9 goals in 1990/91; both these seasons saw Bolton lose at Wembley in the Play-Offs. Although he did help the club gain promotion to Division One in 1992/93.

After netting 36 goals in 270 appearances Darby joined his former manager Phil Neal at Coventry on 28 October 1993 for a fee of £150,000. He scored 5 goals from 26 Premier League appearances, scoring a brace twice. These were in a 3-2 defeat at West ham on 11 December 1993 and in a 2-1 victory at home against Blackburn on 2 May 1994.

Injuries hampered his progress at Highfield Road making 29 appearances in 1994/95and transferred to West Brom for a fee of £250,000 on 24 November 1995.

He made 39 appearances, netting one goal for the baggies until his transfer to Preston in a player exchange deal involving Kevin Kilbane on 13 June 1997.

He made his debut as a substitute for Sean Gregan in a 3-2 defeat at Chesterfield on 23 August 1997. Unable to break into the first team regularly after making 12 appearances he was due to join Rotherham on loan but suffered an ankle injury. He did join Rotherham on loan on 26 March 1998 making 3 appearances.

The following season he returned to PNE and scored his first goals. The first was in the FA Cup First Round in a 3-0 win against Ford United. After scoring in the Auto Windowscreen Shield tie at Hartlepool his only league goal came in a 2-2 draw at Millwall on 24 April 1999. He made 20 league appearances during the season and spent part of the time at right back prior to the signing of Graham Alexander.

His last appearance for Preston was similar to his first appearance coming on as a substitute in a match at Chesterfield on 12 February 2000. At least Preston won 1-0 this time. He had made 36 appearances netting one goal.

On 1 August 2000 Darby joined Carlisle on a free transfer and made 18 appearances during the season, scoring once in a 2-1 home defeat to Scunthorpe on 28 October 2000. His last league game was a 1-1 draw at Lincoln on 2 May 2001.

After retiring as a player he started his coaching career at Preston and became first-team coach. When Billy Davies left Preston in the summer of 2006 to Derby County, Julian Darby followed him as first-team coach. In January 2009 he again joined up with Billy Davies when he was appointed first team coach at Nottingham Forest.
