Player Profile - Pawel Abbott

Pawel Tadeusz Howard was born in York on 2 December 1981 to a Polish mother and English father.

Abbott's career started as a youth player at Polish side LKS Lodz, before joining Preston for a fee of £125,000 on 15 February 2001.

To get some experience in English football Abbot joined Bury on loan in August 2002 and made his league debut in a 2-1 defeat at Oxford on 10 August. His first goal came two weeks later in a 1-1 draw at Hull. In total he made 13 league appearances, scoring 5 goals.

Following an injury crisis at Preston he retuned to PNE and made his debut as a substitute for David Healy after 71 minutes in a 1-0 home win against Reading on 26 October. His first goal for the Lilywhites came within 10 minutes of his full home debut in a 5-3 defeat against Wimbledon.

In March 2003 he returned for his second spell with Bury but was restricted to just 15 days as this took him to a total of 93 days which was the maximum under football league regulations. Abbot scored one goal in four appearances.

Abbott then scored in his first game back at Preston in injury time as Preston drew 2-2 with Coventry and over the season scored 4 goals in 16 appearances.

The 2003/04 season saw Abbot scored twice in 9 appearances before joining Huddersfield on loan as a replacement for Jon Stead in March 2004. Abbot last appearance for PNE was a 2-1 defeat at Swansea in the FA Cup 4th Round on 26 January; he had scored 6 goals in 25 appearances.

Abbot scored on debut for Huddersfield coming off the bench in a 1-1 draw against Bristol Rovers on 17 February 2004. He then scored in his next two appearances. After 4 goals in 6 appearances he was signed permanently for a fee of around £125,000.

His first full season for Huddersfield saw him become top scorer with 27 goals including a hat-trick in a 3-0 win at Port Vale on 11 September 2004 as well as a brace on a further four occasions.

The 2005/06 season saw him score 14 goals in all competitions including a goal in each of his first six appearances of the season.

In July 2006 Abbott rejected a move to MK Dons. Abbott scored a brace in a 3-2 win against Swansea on 30 December which saw him score a 90th minute penalty and Lee Trundle sent off. He was sent off himself in his final appearance on New Years Day in a 3-0 defeat at Doncaster.

He was in his last season of his contract with Huddersfield and after scoring 44 goals in 105 appearances saw Abbot join Swansea on a two and a half year deal for a fee of £150,000 as a replacement for Rory Fallon on 22 January 2007. He made his Swans debut in a 2-0 home win against Gillingham the following day. His only goal for the club came in a 2-1 win at Rotherham on 27 February. Added to the signing of Jason Scotland his stay in Wales only lasted six months as he found himself down the pecking order. His eighteenth and last appearance came in a 6-3 home defeat to Blackpool on 5 May 2007.

In July 2007 Abbott signed for Darlington for £100,000 and made his debut in a 2-0 win at home to Wrexham on 11 August. His first goals came seven days later with a brace in a 3-0 win at Accrington. Abbott scored a further brace in March 2008 in a 3-2 win against Grimsby. During the season he had scored 9 league goals in 24 appearances.

The 2008/09 season saw Abbott scored a brace on his last appearance for Darlington in a 2-1 win at relegated Chester on 3 May 2009. He had scored 17 goals in 42 appearances for the Quakers.

On 1 July 2009 Abbott signed for Oldham on a free transfer, he had played under Oldham boss Dave Penney while at the Quakers before the former Doncaster boss moved to Boundary Park in April 2009.

He has scored twice in 6 appearances for Oldham, both goals coming in a 2-1 victory at Leyton Orient on 15 August 2009.
