Frank O'Donnell

Frank was born in Buckhaven on 31 August 1911 and was the older of the two, although there were a total of 15 children and was probably the better known in having scored 50 goals in 75 appearances for Celtic. He made his debut in the number ten shirt on the opening day of the 1935/36 season, which was also his 24th birthday in a 1-0 defeat by Huddersfield. His first goal for the club came in his seventh appearance in a 2-0 win at home to Wolves on 212 September. Frank finished on 15 goals for the season, two behind Bud Maxwell. His goals included a brace on three occasions.

The 1936/37 season he ended up leading scorer with 16 league goals in 39 appearances. But it was in the FA Cup which he played a staring role scoring a total of 11 goals, including hat-tricks in round four and five in victories at Deepdale over Stoke and Exeter. Frank scored in every round including the goal in the final although Preston lost the match against Sunderland 3-1. On 17 April 1937 he made his first of six international appearances for Scotland, netting a goal in a 3-1 win at Hamden Park over England.

The following season saw Frank make 14 appearances, scoring 7 goals to take his total to 36 goals from 92 appearances. His last game was a 1-1 draw at Derby on 27 November 1937. His final goal came a week earlier in a 2-0 home win over Blackpool.

It was Blackpool who he joined in exchange for Dicky Watmough and Jimmy McIntosh. He scored 10 goals in 17 appearances for the remainder of the 1937/38 season, only two behind leading scorers Will Buchan and Bobby Finan who both had played more games.

Frank made a further 13 appearances in 1938/39 netting 7 goals for Blackpool before joining Aston Villa in November 1938. Due to the war the following year the 1938/39 was his only season for the club, scoring 14 goals from 29 appearances, two behind leading scorer Frank Broom.

After the war Frank joined Nottingham Forest and scored 5 times from 11 appearances, before finishing his career with Buxton.

Frank died on 4 September 1952, aged just 41.

Hugh O'Donnell

Hugh was also born in Buckhaven but on 15 February 1913. He made his debut in the same game as his brother but in the number 11 shirt and made the same number of appearances during the season in 39. His first goals were a brace against Manchester City in a 4-0 home win on 19 October; the other two goals were scored by his brother Frank. A further brace was scored in a 4-2 defeat at Wolves in April to take his league goal tally to 13 for the season.

The following season Hugh scored 7 goals from 38 appearances including a brace in a 5-2 win against Derby and also played in the defeat to Sunderland in the FA Cup Final.

The following season he went one better than his brother when Preston be Huddersfield in the 1938 FA Cup Final and had scored 5 goals in 35 appearances during the season.

Hugh scored twice in 20 appearances to take his Preston league total to 29 goals from 132 appearances. His last game was a 2-1 home win against Leicester on 14 January 1939.
