Player Profile NEIL WHITWORTH


Neil Anthony Whitworth was born in Ince on 12 April 1972. Whitworth started his career with Wigan and had made just one full and one substitute appearance for the Latics before signing for Manchester United for £45,000 on 1 June 1990.


In four years with United, Whitworth only made one first team appearance against Southampton in March 1991.


During this time with United, Whitworth obtained first team experience by going out on loan to four clubs.


The first of these was in January 1992 with Preston for a month. Whitworth made his debut in the 3-1 home defeat to Exeter on 18 January. After another defeat at Brentford the following week he tasted victory with a 2-1 win at Huddersfield. Following another home defeat to Fulham he got his second victory with a 3-1 home win against Hull on February 11. Whitworth played his sixth and final game for the Whites four days later as PNE lost 2-0 at Hartlepool.


After his spell with Preston, Whitworth joined Barnsley on loan making a further 11 league appearances.


The 1993/94 season saw Whitworth join Rotherham on loan in October 1993 for a month. Whitworth made 8 appearances and scored his first league goal. November 1993 Whitworth joined Blackpool making a further three league appearances.


On 2 September 1994 Whitworth joined Kilmarnock for a fee of £265,000. Whitworth made his last appea7rances for Kilmarnock in a 3-1 defeat to Dundee United on 15 November 199. Whitworth had scored 3 goals from 75 league appearances.


Whitworth joined Wigan a second time on a short term contract in March 1998 and made four appearances. The first of these was on 14 March in a 1-0 victory against Oldham and made his last appearances a week later in a 2-0 victory against Walsall.


Whitworth joined Hull City on a free transfer in June 1998 and made his league debut for the club in the 3-1 defeat away at Rotherham on 8 August 1988. His second league appearance saw Whitworth score his first league goal for the Tigers in a 2-1 home defeat against Darlington. His second and last goal was in the following month in a 3-2 home defeat against Brentford.


Whitworth made his last appearance of the season in a 2-0 victory against Salisbury in the FA Cup. After surgery with an Achilles tendon injury the ankle joint became infected and required further surgery. After contracting tuberculosis Whitworth only made one appearance in 1999/2000. This was to be his final one in a Hull shirt as the Tigers won 1-0 at Plymouth on 29 April 2000. Whitworth had made 19 league appearances, scoring two goals for Hull.


Whitworth joined Exeter in August 2000 and stayed for three years. Whitworth made his Exeter debut in a 2-1 home defeat against Cardiff. He suffered a red card in his fifth appearance against Mansfield. His only goal for the club was a 65 minute header from a corner in the 3-1 defeat against Halifax on 4 November 2000. During 2000/01 Whitworth made 34 league appearances for the club.


In his first game of the 2001/02 season he was sent off against Halifax and made 18 appearances during the season. His last game for Exeter was on 29 October 2002 in a 3-3 draw against Rochdale. Whitworth had made 57 appearances for Exeter.


For the start of the 2003/04 season Whitworth joined non-league Southport.
