Player Profile Gerry Stewart
Gerald (Gerry) Stewart was born in Dundee on 2 September 1946. After coming through the junior ranks at Preston, Stewart signed professional forms for the club in September 1963.
Stewart stayed at Preston for eight years but was understudy to Republic of Ireland Goalkeeper Alan Kelly for virtually all of the time.
In those eight years, Stewart only made 4 appearances for Preston and none was at Deepdale. His debut for Preston was in a 3-2 defeat at Wolves on 19 November 1966. His next two matches came in the final games of the 1967/68 and 1968/69 seasons in a 2-0 defeat at Crystal Palace on 15 May 1968 and a 1-0 victory at Charlton on 19 April 1969. Stewart's last game for PNE was in the relegation season of 1969/70 in a 2-1 defeat at Cardiff on 22 November 1969.
In September 1970 Stewart joined Third Division Barnsley. Stewart made 37 appearances for Barnsley in 1971/72 replacing Keith Barker in the green jersey although the season ended in disappointment as Barnsley finished 22 nd and were relegated on goal difference to the Fourth Division.
Stewart stayed for a further three seasons as Barnsley finished mid table in 14 th, 13 th and 15 th respectively in the Fourth Division. The 1972/73 season Stewart made 24 appearances as Barnsley used a total of four goalkeepers. The following season Stewart made 35 appearances and in his final season for the club in 1974/75 he made 42 league appearances and made a total of 138 appearances for the club.
Stewart joined non-league Boston United in 1975 and stayed for 5 years making 167 league appearances. He was an ever-present in 1975/76 and 1977/78. He represented the English Non-League Eleven against their Italian counterparts as was regarded as the top goalkeeper in the Northern Premier League.
