Player Profile - Emlyn Williams

Emlyn Williams was born in Maesteg on 15 January 1912 and made over 180 league appearances as a Centre-half but never scored a goal.

Williams joined Wrexham but did not make an appearance for the Division Three North side in 1934/35. Williams joined non-league Buxton Town before joining Barnsley in October 1936.

The 1936/37 season saw Barnsley finish 14th in the Second Division with Williams making 14 appearances. The following season saw him become a more permanent fixture making 33 league appearances but could not help avoid the Tykes from being relegated on goal difference as Nottingham Forest had a better goal difference of one goal.

The 1938/39 saw Barnsley win the Division Three north title a full 11 points ahead of fellow Yorkshire club Doncaster and 15 above third placed Bradford. Williams only missed one league game during that season.

In June 1939 Williams joined Preston but did not make an appearance as three months later the season was abandoned.

Football resumed in 1946 and Williams finally made his debut on the second match of the season with a 2-1 home defeat to Sheffield United on 4 September 1946 and made 33 league appearances during the season as Preston finished 7th in the First Division.

The 1947/48 season saw Williams continue with the number 5 shirt and made the last of his 62 appearances in a 4-2 defeat at Wolves on 10 April 1948.

Williams re-joined Barnsley who were playing in the Second Division and made 2 appearances for the remainder of the season.

The 1948/49 season saw Williams make a further 15 appearances for Barnsley to take the tally in his two spells to 105 league appearances.

In December 1948 Williams returned to Lancashire to join Third Division North side Accrington Stanley, making 15 appearances as Stanley finished 20th.

Williams passed away in 1989.
